A psychic atlas in thirty-one rooms

A continuing genealogy

The room has never been a backdrop.

Since 2008, Massimo Scognamiglio has returned to the room as an architecture of the inner life. STANZE does not close that history: it opens its newest threshold.

  1. 01

    Cycle of Rooms

The room appears as a mental perimeter: bodies, corners, thresholds and silences.

  2. 02

    Rooms, again

The figure returns to test what has changed in desire, age and memory.

  3. 03

    The Gold Standard

Gold becomes light, value and distance inside the inhabited space.

  4. 04

    STANZE

Words, digital painting, AI, paper, tearing and gold leaf enter the same living body.

The new corpus

Love begins in a room. It often ends there too.

These works move between solitude and proximity. A body waits, two bodies touch, a couple separates, children remain alone, sleepers abandon themselves to the ground. Adolescence and maturity share the same rooms, but they do not inhabit them in the same way.

Red, black, earth and gold do not describe interiors: they measure emotional pressure. Walls expand around a single figure or collapse around an embrace. What is outside becomes increasingly remote, until the world remains beyond the room.

STANZE continues the artist’s historical research into the human figure and psychic space while changing the process that brings the image into being.

Digital painting · Artificial intelligence

The machine reads the subconscious.

AI is not asked to invent an artist. It receives language, memory, obsessions and visual decisions. The prompt becomes a transmission: words cross the machine and return as an image to be judged, altered and brought back into matter by the artist.

300.000km/sspeed of light
“My words transmit my soul at 300,000 km per second.”

From image to matter

Tearing in negative. A gold patch.

The digital image is not the finished object. Printed on paper, it is made unique through a physical act that removes, repairs and leaves evidence.

Illustrative presentation of Nothing Close to Me with negative tearing
01

Negative tearing

In Nothing Close to Me the paper will be torn away. Tearing no longer supplies a fragment to paint over: absence itself becomes the intervention. Removing makes the work unique.

Illustrative presentation of The Sleepers with a torn edge and gold-leaf patch
02

The Sleepers · gold-leaf patch

In Five Boys Sleeping on the Grass, the tear is joined by a patch of gold leaf. The wound is neither hidden nor restored: it is marked by another value and another light.

Continuities

Before and around STANZE

Four points of entry connect this corpus to Scognamiglio’s longer research into rooms, bodies, vulnerability and care.

  1. 01

    Cycle of Rooms

The historical pictorial nucleus in which the room becomes psychic architecture.

  2. 02

    The Gold Standard

Figures, rooms and gold as a measure of human presence.

  3. 03

A painted body is never only a body

A reflection on figure, identity and the politics of looking.

  4. 04

When art enters the healthcare system

Art, vulnerability and care beyond the protected space of the studio.
